A stump left behind after a removal is not just cosmetic. It is a trip hazard in a lawn, a hard stop that ruins mower blades, and rotting wood in contact with soil is exactly what carpenter ants and termites are looking for. Left alone, many species will also keep sending up suckers from the root system for years.
Grinding is the practical answer. Our grinders reduce the stump and its flare roots to mulch, working down to whatever depth the plan for that spot requires — flush for a garden bed, six to eight inches down for turf, deeper if something is going to be built or planted there. We grind stumps we removed and stumps that have been sitting for a decade.

FAQ
Grinding uses a cutting wheel to reduce the stump and its flare roots to mulch, typically to six or eight inches below grade. Full removal excavates the entire root plate, which means heavy equipment, a large hole, and a much bigger disturbance to your yard. Grinding gives you a usable, level surface for far less money and mess, and it is the right choice for the large majority of jobs.
It depends on what the spot is for. Flush is fine for a garden bed or a mulched area. For lawn we go six to eight inches below grade so there is room for topsoil and grass to establish over it. If you are planning to build or plant a new tree there, tell us — that needs to go deeper, and we plan for it.
Not directly in the same hole. Even after grinding, the site is full of decaying wood, which ties up nitrogen and settles as it breaks down. If you want a tree in that spot, the practical options are to excavate the grindings and backfill with proper soil, or plant a few feet to the side. We will talk through which makes sense for your yard.
The default is to backfill the void with the grindings, which is free and settles naturally over a season — expect a slight mound at first that will drop. If you would rather have them gone, or want them kept for mulch elsewhere on the property, just say so when we quote.
Usually, yes. The limiting factor is gate width and ground conditions, not the stump. We check access when we quote and bring the machine that fits — if the only route in is too narrow for a self-propelled grinder, we will tell you what the alternatives cost rather than turning up and improvising.
